Works to Albany’s iconic heritage-listed Town Hall have become more visible over the past week as workers progress to replacing the old building’s roof.
It’s part of an extensive project to restore the hall to its former glory, with modern technology expanding the building’s capacity to host a wide variety of visual and performance arts, collections, exhibitions and community uses.
The repurposing includes important conservation works, structural repairs and much-needed upgrades to the roof, lighting, services, storage, timber floors, window treatments and main entry.
Executive Director Infrastructure and Environment Paul Camins said most of the work done so far had been internal demolition and service upgrades, including returning the upper storey to a flat-floor space like it was in yesteryear.
“It has included preparing for a new loading, service and storage area at the rear 1980’s addition, and removing the tiered seating and old services in the first floor auditorium as part of the restoration of the original multi-purpose flat-floor space.
“Work has also been done on the ground floor to support upgrades to public galleries, operational, staff and community areas.”
The re-roofing of the main hall signals the start of a new phase of works that will include restoration of windows in the main hall, and construction of the new loading, services and public amenities wing addressing the Town Square and Grey Street.
“We’ll also be reconnecting services like water, power, drainage and sewer, so other fit-out infrastructure can be completed as we progress,” Mr Camins said.
“We’ve made a lot of progress and activity on site is now increasingly focussing on the construction phase. We remain on target to complete the project by the end of this year.”
The City will continue to provide updates on progress at www.albany.wa.gov.au.
A public opening of the Town Hall is also planned and likely to be held in early 2021.
