Lost Pets
Pets sometimes wander away from home, despite their owner's best attempts to keep them secure. If the City of Albany Rangers pick up stray dogs they will attempt to reunite them with their families. The best way to ensure that a lost pet can be identified is to make sure it is microchipped, registered and wearing an identification tag. This is not just the responsible thing to do but is a requirement under West Australian laws.
To report a lost dog or cat, please contact the City of Albany on 6820 3999 during business hours. We will search our records to check if your pet has been located.
The City is required by legislation to keep an unidentified dog or cat in the pound for a minimum of 72 hours to provide time for the dog to be reunited with its owner. After that period, the City seeks to find new homes for animals suitable for re-homing.
Found Dogs
To report a found dog, please contact the City of Albany on 6820 3999. The information that you will need to provide includes:
- The current location of the dog,
- A description of the animal (e.g. breed, size, colour etc.)
- Details of any registration or identification tag.
If possible, please restrain the dog to prevent it wandering off.

Rehoming Impounded Animals
Unidentified dogs that have been in the pound for longer than three days, or unidentified cats that have been retained for three working days that are not claimed by owners, may be rehomed.
The City of Albany works closely with animal rescue organisations to find new homes for impounded animals. If your dog or cat has been referred to a rescue organisation for re-homing you will need to contact them directly as they will be the new legal owner of the animal.
A re-homing fee applies to animals rehomed directly from the City of Albany.
