Albany’s military history will be preserved as part of a refurbishment of Princess Royal Fortress’ Garrison Barracks set to get underway in Albany Heritage Park next month.
The City of Albany were successful in receiving a $228,000 grant from the Department of Veteran Affairs to make vital upgrades on the Barracks Building to improve its content offering and visitor experience.
From March 3 the Barracks Building will be closed to visitors while works are completed to upgrade lighting, paint the display rooms, refresh internal storyboards, install new display cases, and fabricate staging elements to recreate how the World War II gun was set up in active service.
It is expected that this work in the Barracks Building will take up to 4 months and has been scheduled to start after the peak period for the Heritage Park. The community will be advised when they reopen.
City of Albany’s Manager Facilities Letitia Stone said the upgrades will allow the military museum to display more content and be more interactive for visitors.
“This grant enables us to build on what is already a comprehensive display, incorporating environmental controls for preserving the artefacts which will allow for bigger and better exhibitions, a modern facility and an added level of quality,” she said.
“The site recognises the thousands of individuals that served within the Fortress from 1893 to 1956 and plays an important educational role, so this upgrade will focus on encouraging school visitation.”
The temporary closure of the barracks building will not affect the current exhibition within the Married Quarters West Wing titled World War I… In Miniature where 6 cases with over 30 dioramas including cars, trucks, tanks and planes are currently on display.
Volunteer services, information hub and the National Anzac Centre operations are unaffected during the refurbishment works which are due to be completed at the end of June 2020.
