Mayoral Statement - 25 September 2024

Published on Wednesday, 25 September 2024 at 8:45:44 AM

Last night, the City of Albany Council concluded a well-considered discussion regarding the access and placement of two specific books in the Albany Public Library. The books in question, Welcome to Sex and Sex: A Book for Teens, were the focus of requests from some community members to limit access for younger children.

Prior to the Special Meeting of Electors on 26 August, our dedicated library staff made the administrative decision to locate Welcome to Sex in the Young Adult section upon its return to the library. Sex: A Book for Teens will no longer be available in the library's collection, as the existing copy has been reported lost and the publication is no longer in circulation. It’s important to note that the Albany Public Library operates under State and Federal policies that safeguard and promote the free flow of information and ideas, and Council is also governed by its responsibilities under the Local Government Act 1995.

This conversation has at times, highlighted differences within our community. While differing viewpoints are a natural part of any discussion, it’s important that we always approach these differences with kindness and understanding.

Council has taken great care to listen to the diverse perspectives shared by our community and has worked to make a decision that is both informed and respectful of these views. Albany is a place of inclusivity and vibrancy, where we embrace what makes us unique. It is through these differences that we become a stronger, more connected community.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the staff at Albany Public Library for their continued professionalism and commitment. Our library is a treasured community resource, frequently recognised in Community Perception surveys as one of the City’s most valued services. The expertise and care our library team demonstrates day in and day out have made it a space where all are welcome, and many feel supported.

As the year draws to a close, I encourage us all to be mindful of one another, respectful of our differences, and focused on the shared values that bring us together. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this discussion in a thoughtful and respectful manner.

At the heart of Council is our commitment to an inclusive community, and we will continue to work collaboratively to support and uplift one another as we move forward together.
