Further upgrades to Albany Public Library will get underway this month to make room for the return of the extensive and valuable Albany History Collection into the York Street building.
The Collection moved out of the library in 2017 due to constraints related to the initial construction at the Library to accommodate the Albany Visitor Centre, relocating to the Albany Co-operative Society building until June 2018.
When a new tenancy moved into the Co-operative Society, the Collection took up temporary residence in Vancouver Arts Centre where it has remained until now.
A new mezzanine floor within the Library will create space to permanently house the Albany History Collection, and other cosmetic works will be done to give the internal structure of the library a facelift and create a custom study space for local university students.
Acting Executive Director Community Services Nathan Watson said the Library and Albany History Collection were the perfect fit and complemented each other’s service.
“Albany History Collection has been a part of the Library since the 1980’s so we’re pleased that we can now return it to this valuable community space and give that Collection a permanent home again,” Mr Watson said.
“We are also making the connection between Alison Hartman Gardens and the Library simplified with a new stairway connecting the two areas as well as providing a study space for students that they can access after hours.”
Works at the Library will begin this month and we ask for the community’s understanding and patience with library staff during the construction phase.
“We’ll do our best to keep disruption to a minimum, but the end result will be a more accessible and comfortable space for the community,” Mr Watson said.
