Construction of the Southern Ocean Surf Reef at Binalup / Middleton Beach is set to commence during the second half of this month, with works expected to be completed in approximately six weeks.
The project, which has been driven by community advocacy for nearly two decades, aims to create a consistent surfable wave central to Albany, delivering benefits for tourism, recreation, and economic development while helping to retain younger residents in the region.
During the construction period, the City of Albany urges all water users to stay out of the construction area and follow onsite signage to ensure safety.
Heron’s Machiavelli backhoe dredge will play a key role in the construction process, while split hopper barges transport rocks from the stockpile at Southern Ports to the Binalup / Middleton Beach construction site, approximately 150m north of the Surfers Beach car park and 140m offshore.
Albany Boardriders spokesperson Peter Bolt said the reef will be a game-changer for the local surf community.
“The Southern Ocean Surf Reef will provide a much-needed boost for Albany’s surfing scene, creating a more consistent wave and allowing us to host high-quality surfing events,” he said.
“It’s also a fantastic opportunity to inspire and develop the next generation of surfers, giving them a more accessible place to train and compete right here in Albany.”
City of Albany Mayor Greg Stocks said the project was an investment in the city’s future.
“Our aim is not only to deliver a regular wave at one of the best beaches in WA but to drive benefits in tourism, economic development, and keep our youth in Albany for longer,” he said.
“The Southern Ocean Surf Reef will enhance Albany’s reputation as an adventure and recreation destination, attract more visitors during the winter season, and contribute to the ongoing revitalisation of the Binalup / Middleton Beach precinct.”
The Southern Ocean Surf Reef is a collaborative project made possible through funding contributions from the Commonwealth Government, the Western Australian State Government’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the City of Albany, and Albany Boardriders, with additional in-kind support from Southern Ports.
