Community collaboration enhances Avenue of Honour

Enhancements will commence in late April to revitalise the Avenue of Honour, improving accessibility and preserving its significance as a place of reflection and remembrance.

This collaborative project between local community groups and organisations includes RSL Albany Sub-Branch, City of Albany, Veterans Assist Great Southern, APEX Albany, Southern Regional TAFE, Aboriginal descendants of the Farmer Family, and prisoners from Pardelup Prison Farm, with local businesses also providing in-kind support and resources.

The upgrades will include landscaping improvements, native plantings, and a winding, compacted pathway to improve access to the memorial plaques beneath the trees.

Initial earthworks, carried out by Pardelup Prison Farm, will begin after ANZAC Day and are expected to be completed by June.

Pardelup Superintendent David Patterson said the project was not only an opportunity for the prisoners to gain skills in landscaping and construction, but also a chance to give back to the community.

“They’re not just building a beautiful walkway - they’re building a legacy both for themselves and the community which will walk this path for years to come,” Superintendent Patterson said.

The planting phase will follow, led by Southern Regional TAFE students who developed the landscape concept, in collaboration with Veterans Assist and the City of Albany, with completion expected by late September.

Three access points will be added on each side to improve connectivity and create a more sustainable environment.

Executive Director Community Services Nathan Watson said the project reflects the community’s commitment to honouring those who served.

“This is an important space for remembrance, and it is heartening to see so many local groups and organisations working together to enhance and preserve it,” Mr Watson said.

“Projects like this demonstrate the power of collaboration and community spirit.

“The improved access and landscaping will ensure it remains a peaceful and accessible place for generations to come.”

A monthly volunteer program will be established to assist with upkeep, complementing the City’s existing maintenance schedule.
