City of Albany supports National Reconciliation Week

The City of Albany is proud to support National Reconciliation Week 2024 with a series of community events that underscore this year's theme, Now More Than Ever.

The week's activities will include a variety of cultural, educational, and community events designed to celebrate and promote understanding of Noongar culture.

These events will feature storytelling sessions, language workshops, exhibitions, and guided cultural heritage walks to discover the hidden stories of Albany's indigenous heritage.

Each event aims to provide opportunities for the community to learn from Noongar Elders, engage with traditional stories and songs, and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the Noongar people.

The City is collaborating with Reconciliation WA to deliver a National Reconciliation Week Breakfast at the Albany Entertainment Centre on 27 May where participants can tune into the broadcast from Boorloo Perth.

On 29 May, local Menang artist Shandell Cummings will share her experiences as a First Nations yorga (woman) and delve into the importance and benefits of knowledge exchange between First Nations communities and non-Indigenous Australians.

Albany Public Library is hosting the film Sweet Country which tells the story of an Aboriginal man who faces danger after a violent confrontation forces him to flee from a vengeful posse, amidst the harsh landscape of the 1929 Central Australian outback.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said the City of Albany is dedicated to fostering understanding and respect through these events.

“Reconciliation Week is a crucial time for our community to come together, reflect on our shared history, and commit to building a united future,” he said.

“These events offer valuable opportunities for everyone in our community to engage with Noongar culture, learn from Elders, and contribute to the reconciliation process.

“We are honoured to support and celebrate National Reconciliation Week with such a diverse and enriching program.”

National Reconciliation Week commences from 27 May, 2024 and more information can be found at www.albany.wa.gov.au/events.
