The City of Albany has collaborated with local agencies to deliver a program of events that is rich in indigenous culture and honours Albany’s Menang-Noongar community for NAIDOC Week 2024.
Albany Town Hall and Public Library will become home to the Dardi Boorna-Wangkiny NAIDOC Film Festival from 9 – 14 of July that includes films from across Australia.
Black Magic, Spear, Occupation: Native, Land Bilong Islanders, Bran Nue Dae, and Genocide in the Wildflower State will be screened free of charge, providing the community with an opportunity to view these powerful films.
Albany Entertainment Centre hosts award winning indigenous performer Emma Donovan on 6 July, local Noongar inspired artist performance, Thunderstorm (Malkar) on 12 July and an indigenous history performance The Visitors on 16 July.
The 2024 Southern Aboriginal Corporation’s NAIDOC Ball will take place at the Albany Entertainment Centre, inviting Albany’s indigenous community to enjoy a night of glamour and celebration.
Museum of the Great Southern hosts Drop-in NAIDOC Kids Activities from 8-10 July and an Exhibition of NAIDOC Posters from 7-14 July.
Indigenous Design Shrinkies, Nature Walk & Collage, Sharing Noongar Language and Bush Foods & Medicine Plants all take place at Albany Public Library from 9 – 31 July.
Outdoor events will suit the whole family with NAIDOC Play in the Park on 9 & 12 July at Albany Town Square and NAIDOC Community Festival will be held at Alison Hartman Gardens later this year.
Albany Noongar Centre is also offering an Opening Church Service from 10am on 7 July, free of charge to those who wish to attend.
Albany Mayor Greg Stocks said NAIDOC Week is an important celebration of our local indigenous community.
“As we come together to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2024 in Albany, we proudly showcase the rich culture and profound contributions of our Menang-Noongar community,” he said. “This week is a testament to our commitment to reconciliation and respect, and I encourage everyone to join us in commemorating this important occasion.”
NAIDOC Week 2024 is also supported by Palmerston, Great Southern Development Commission, Water Corporation, Southern Port Authority, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attraction, National Indigenous Australians Agency and Kadadjini Aboriginal Corporation.
