Workshops show the business side of arts

Published on Tuesday, 27 June 2023 at 11:54:00 AM

The City has received a grant from Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries that will support the delivery of professional development workshops for the arts and culture sector.

The Business Side of Arts workshops are designed to equip local artists and creatives with the business, marketing and practical skills required to support their success as an arts practitioner.

The program will include a series of targeted workshops aimed at building capacity within the local arts and culture sector and transfer skills that support emerging artists and creatives.

Demand for upskilling in this area was identified through consultation with local Great Southern artists and aligns to the strategic objectives of the City’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Plan 2022-2027.

The City’s Arts and Culture team is collaborating with service providers such as Albany Business Centre to allow their team of qualified business support staff to connect with the arts community.

Workshops will be delivered monthly and include topics such as pricing, packaging and shipping your artworks, preparing a resume, grant writing, social media, submitting an expression of interest, managing stress and booking gigs.

Cultural Development Officer Donna Cameron said the sector has been lacking a program like The Business Side of Arts and is thrilled to see it come to fruition.

“Local artists have been navigating the business element of the art industry unassisted until now, so this is a very welcome initiative that the City is excited to offer to the creative community,” she said.

“The City is engaging local arts practitioners to deliver practical skills development workshops, providing the opportunity for them to share their career pathways, skills and experience with emerging artists and creatives.

“To be able to offer something so valuable to the arts community in a time when it’s needed the most will ensure the support of local arts organisations and a high level of engagement from arts practitioners.”

The Business Side of Arts commences in July 2023.
