Sea Sings, Lumen and Winged Realm brings together work by Australian artists Jo Darvall, Martin King, and Clare Humphries, who explore connectedness to land, sky and species.
Work from each artist has been developed through practices of wondering, observing and passing through urban parks, strolling in bushland, leafing through books or watching the rising moon.
Each artist seeks to become more attentive to the presences around them, and to honour the species and ecosystems that are under constant threat in the colonial anthropocene.
The exhibition includes Martin King’s melancholic odes to endangered birds who find refuge in urban parks, and his delicate drawn animations that reenchant us with the wonder of flight.
Jo Darvall’s joyful prints meditate on the cycle of the lotus flower which returns to murky water each evening, only to opens its blooms again at the break of day when it is reborn.
Clare Humphries subtle lunar works explore a similar cycle of hope, as she documents her encounters with the ever shifting moments of moonrise over time.
As we face the consequences of ecological change, Sea Sings, Lumen and Winged Realm seeks to prompt attentiveness to and care for, the cycles, rhythms and knowledge of the natural world.
City of Albany Visual Arts Officer Indra Geidans said the exhibition provides an opportunity for audiences to take a moment to appreciate their surroundings.
“Sea Sings, Lumen and Winged Realm is a reminder of the world we live in. From the ground we walk on to the ocean we swim in and even the air we breathe,” she said.
“Albany Town Hall is delighted to host this all-Australian exhibition which empowers us to slow down and take in the natural beauty around us.”
A free artist talk will be held on Saturday 4 March from 10:30am at the Albany Town Hall.
Sea Sings, Lumen and Winged Realm opens at the Albany Town Hall Gallery from Saturday 4 March until Thursday 30 March.
