Mayor Statement

Published on Saturday, 2 March 2024 at 11:10:00 AM

Remarks made by Councillor Brough during the recent Ordinary Council Meeting have caused damage, division, hurt and disappointment within our community.

These remarks were part of Councillor Brough’s elected member report and express his personal opinions alone. These are not my views, and I am very disappointed with his comments.

I do not agree with Councillor Brough’s comments, inferences, or the conclusions he drew in his speech. They are not representative of the City’s commitment to an inclusive community.

The Council plays a role in encouraging inclusivity and creating an environment where all individuals feel valued, respected, and included. This is reflected by the City's support for the Albany Pride Festival.

Greg Stocks

Mayor, City of Albany

The above statement was released on 2 March 2024 in response to comments made by Councillor Brough during his Elected Member Report at the February 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting.

Below is the transcript of Councillor Brough’s comments from the February 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting.

“Following on from Councillor Cruse’s comments, I totally agree government shouldn’t be worried about what people are getting up to in their bedrooms, I certainly don’t. But within the coalition of the LGBTQIA+ I just want to hone in on the plus. That includes a group of people who identify as minor attracted persons. I would encourage all citizens and Councillors to look up what being a minor attracted persons means.”
