Albany innovation will be well-represented by local school groups when they compete in the FIRST LEGO League WA Championship in Perth this month.
To qualify, 12 teams of students faced off at the Albany Town Hall last week, testing their mettle against their peers in two STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) problem solving challenges – the Robot Challenge and the Innovation Project.
Students cheered each other on as their LEGO robots navigated a series of missions and teams engaged in research to find innovative solutions to some of societies big challenges.
Local students excelled in the competition with three groups qualifying to join 45 other teams from across WA at the State Championships on Saturday, December 10.
The Octonauts from North Albany Senior High School and SJCA1 and SJCA2 from St Joseph’s College Albany impressed judges and robot games referees with their teamwork, core values and engineering.
Manager Community Relations Louise Paterson said the FIRST LEGO League program is a great opportunity for students to put their creative problem-solving skills into practice.
“It was fantastic to see students of all backgrounds learning new skills and embracing the healthy competition at Albany’s qualifying round,” she said.
“To have Albany representation heading to the WA Championships in Perth off the back of our first local event is fantastic.
“Supporting these initiatives helps provide equal opportunities for regional students to explore innovative and exciting technologies.”
Albany’s FIRST LEGO League community is proudly supported by the City of Albany, Rio Tinto and Curtin University.
