Hockey reaches new lights in Albany

Players and spectators will see Albany’s hockey pitch in a new light as it becomes the first location within the precinct to support brand new LED lighting.

The City of Albany has partnered with the Lower Great Southern Hockey Association to provide this significant upgrade to the field lighting for players and spectators.

It provides the facility with 500lux lighting for night matches and complements the recently upgraded hockey turf.

The light towers have reduced from 9 halogen lights per pole to 6 LED lights per pole, which is expected to provide the City and community with energy savings.

Better lighting has been a priority for the City across the sporting precinct with the safety of players a priority.

Manger Recreation Services Mitch Green said the old hockey lighting was at end of life and well below industry standards, jeopardising the immediate future of night fixtures on the new turf.

“Hockey is a growing sport in the Great Southern with primary school players picking up a stick all the way up to A-grade adults and even professionals who have played their whole lives,” he said.

“Since the City upgraded the turf in 2020 to TigerTurf, the feedback from players across the region has been overwhelmingly positive.

“These upgrades to the facility mean that we can confidently host major events like the upcoming Australian Country Hockey Challenge in August as well as grand finals and night matches safely.”

The Albany hockey pitch lights were installed last month in time for the Australian Country Hockey Challenge that involves teams from across the country.
