Following significant consultation with the Albany community and key stakeholders, the City of Albany Bicentenary Strategic Plan was adopted by Council at Tuesday night’s Special Council Meeting.

Supported by the Albany Bicentenary Advisory Group, the Plan provides a blue-print for decision making and guidance in the lead-up to the Bicentenary in 2026.

More than 1,000 residents were involved with the Bicentenary engagement that included a Youth Symposium where students aged 11 to 16 lent their voices to this once in a generation project.

The Plan presents a vison and preferred model for the Bicentenary that identifies priority objectives for the delivery of a successful Bicentenary. These encompass a space to reflect authentically on the past, celebrate the present, and build a future where anything is possible.

Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington said the adoption of the Bicentenary Strategic Plan is a huge step forward in what will be a once in a lifetime event for Albany.

“Albany’s Bicentenary will set the benchmark for our state. Albany was the first place in Western Australia where Aboriginal and British people commenced living together and it is the place which sparked development of the state we know today,” he said.

“It’s important that the Bicentenary tells the whole story of Albany and provides an opportunity for everyone to be involved. Events such as this also have the potential to deliver far-reaching social and economic development outcomes for the entire region and put Albany on the map once again in terms of large-scale event delivery.

“The community have demonstrated great enthusiasm for this project with a keen interest to see our Menang Noongar culture as part of the programming in the lead up to and during 2026. There is also a desire to see Albany produce something really special that shows how proud we are to live in the best part of Australia.”

Adoption of the Bicentenary Strategic Plan will inform a prospectus to seek funding and support for the Bicentenary and the development of an implementation plan.
