CEO Media Statement

The City of Albany would like to thank all the incredible volunteers and agencies who worked tirelessly through the night in response to last night’s heavy rainfall and flooding.

City staff, Albany SES, Volunteer Bushfire Brigades, Police, Main Roads, Water Corporation, Department of Communities, Volunteer Fire & Rescue Service, local contractors and community members all played a crucial role in managing the impacts and keeping our community safe.

Their dedication and quick response were nothing short of fantastic.

The Albany SES received 135 calls for assistance overnight, with teams responding to widespread flooding and storm damage.

While the immediate danger of flooding has passed, we urge everyone to continue exercising caution, particularly when driving through affected areas.

As we continue to clean-up and assess the damage:

  • Albany Public Library, Albany Visitor Centre, Vancouver Arts Centre, and Albany Town Hall are closed today.
  • Albany Primary School and St Joseph’s College Junior School are closed today.
  • The Binalup / Middleton Beach carpark in front of the Surf Club is closed today.
  • Several businesses and other local community amenities have also been impacted and remain closed.

We appreciate the community’s patience as clean-up efforts continue.

If you come across any damage to footpaths, roads, or Council property, please report it via albany.wa.gov.au/reportit to help us prioritise and manage repairs.

With another weather front expected over the next few days – although expected not to be as severe – we encourage residents to prepare their properties, stay alert, and adjust their driving to the conditions.

For the latest information visit emergency.wa.gov.au or the Emergency WA app and if you experience property damage and need help, call the SES on 132 500.

Thank you for your patience and community spirit as we work through the clean-up.

Stay safe.
