The City of Albany is proud to welcome residents back to the newly upgraded and renovated Fossicker's Tip Shop. Located at the entry to the Hanrahan Landfill, the Fossicker's Tip Shop offers residents a great place to find preloved and vintage treasures, at very affordable prices in a fun welcoming environment.

 

The Shop showcases recycled artworks and displays to inspire creative reuse and an endless source of items to upcycle into your newest masterpiece.

 

With stock changing daily, visitors are sure to find something special, whether it’s a new piece of furniture, lovely homewares, garden, renovation or outdoor products. The Shop also stocks affordable electrical items and a great range of clothes for babies, kids and adults.

 

To reduce harmful items going to landfill, Fossicker's will also accept your old mobile phones, batteries, ink cartridges, light globes and tubes, gas bottles and e-waste. These products will all be taken for recycling.

 

The range and type of items will surprise and intrigue visitors, so make a visit to Fossicker's a part of your weekly travels.

Please note: The City's Waste Facilities for 2016 will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day and occasionally other public holidays. Please call the phone numbers in the above table to confirm operating hours if you are planning on visiting during a public holiday.

The City provides one landfill and 5 transfer stations to help you dispose and manage your waste.

The City's Rural Transfer Stations offer recycling facilities, please see City of Albany Transfer Stations User Guide download below to find out more about these facilities.

Please note Hanrahan Road Waste Management Facility does not accept:

  • Any controlled waste
  • Liquid waste; and
  • Car bodies.

Salvageable items are received FREE of charge at the Fossicker's Tip Shop located at the Hanrahan Road Waste Management Facility with items for sale there at a minimal cost.

Baker's Junction Waste Management Facility does not accept refrigerators containing refrigerant gas.

The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program

To keep harmful materials out of the landfill, your hazardous materials can be deposited at Fossicker’s Tip Shop located at the Hanrahan Road Waste Management Facility for FREE. This is thanks to funding from the Waste Authority WA.

 Please see the acceptable materials list below and remember

  • we can only accept quantities of up to 20kg or 20L per material type

  • this service is for residential waste only not commercial waste disposal

  • Albany does not accept unknown/unlabelled bottles of chemicals.

The City encourages all residents to reduce the amount of waste they produce; reuse the waste they do generate by upcycling and repurposing and then recycle any waste that remains.

There is a wide range of recycling services offered to residents including:

  • Paper and cardboard - via your kerbside recycling bin or bring it to the cardboard disposal area at Fossickers Tip Shop at the Hanrahan Landfill Site;
  • Steel and aluminium cans - via your kerbside recycling bin or bring it to the Fossickers Tip Shop;
  • Glass jars and bottles - lids removed in your kerbside recycling bin or bring it to Fossickers Tip Shop where we can re-sell it in the Shop for others to use;
  • Plastic bottles - lids removed placed in your kerbside recycling bin or bring it to Fossickers Tip Shop
  • Electronic Waste - bring your 'e-waste' to Fossickers Tip Shop were you can dispose of this for free and the items will be disassembled and recycled;
  • Batteries, light globes, gas bottles, mobile phones - bring all of these to Fossickers Tip Shop where they will be recycled as much as possible or disposed of responsibly;
  • Paints - bring any half full tins of paint to Fossickers Tip Shop for re-use in the Tip Shop;
  • Chemicals and hazardous household waste - bring it to Fossickers Tip Shop where we will dispose of it responsibly for you.
  • General household items (like furniture, electronics, clothes, kitchen wear, outdoor equipment, sporting goods) - you can bring these items to Fossickers Tip Shop where based on a condition assessment by the Shop Attendants take them for re-sale in the Tip Shop and reduce your disposal costs at the Weighbridge.

The City of Albany is proud to be delivering a wide range of information and education on waste and recycling. Our aim is to make accessing information and encouraging residents to do the right thing with their recycling and waste disposal easy.

Here are some of the great resources and tools you can access to find out more and do your bit to help us maximise recycling, reduce waste to landfill and create a clean, green Albany.

1. Download our City of Albany phone app

This quick and easy application on your phone will answer all your questions about what can and can't be recycled, where to take it and how much it will cost, right on your phone! It will also give you your bin night, bin night reminders and helpful tips. Visit our download page at Download the City of Albany app

2. Keep and check your calendar

Can't access our phone app, no problems! We produce a limited number of our annual community calendar which will tell you your bin days, when it is recycling and on the back pages what you can and can't recycle. Remember to keep this handy throughout the year to answer your questions. We usually distribute these in December each year, give us a call or visit our Office on North Road to pick up a copy.

3. Visit Fossicker's Tip Shop

Need to pick up something new for the house or garden, chances are we will have a preloved, unique and gorgeous treasure waiting at Fossicker's Tip Shop. The City is proud of this facility will stocks a massive range of vintage second hand items. We also have recycled art, displays for inspiration for reusing and upcycling. So instead of purchasing new items pop in and see us, located at Hanrahan Landfill, open 7 Days 8.30am to 4.15pm. Someone's old becoming someone's new!

4. Join us at events and workshops

The City is working hard to deliver a wide range of events and activities that everyone can participate in! These will provide you with information in a fun and interesting way. Our first event was the 'Green Fair on the Square' in November 2016. This was a huge success with over 1,000 participants and we thank everyone for coming along to learn more, celebrate and promote recycling, upcycling, being green and sustainable. We will be offering more events and workshops in 2017 so keep an eye out on our events page - or check your Download our phone app for updates!

5. Come and see your recycling in action

We welcome residents and visitors to come and take a tour of the Materials Recovery Facility – the factory where your recycling is sorted, processed and sent for recycling. We run these tours in partnership with Cleanaway and any groups are welcome – schools, TAFE, associations.

We like to keep our residents informed with not only local information on being green and sustainable but also helpful tips, advice and interesting facts from elsewhere. One way we do this is via our community e-newsletter.
