Albany’s sports men and women were celebrated at the prestigious Wellington and Reeves Sportsperson of the Year Awards on Friday night.

With 33 nominees spread across three categories - Junior, Senior and Veteran - the night demonstrated the high level of athleticism within our community.

2016 Rio Paralympian Brant Garvey was the guest speaker at the event and accompanied past Olympian Peter Watson and Sonja Johnson for an ‘on the couch’ interview.

Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington congratulated the winners on their achievements.

"These awards are highly sought after and competitive, the quality of this year’s entrants demonstrates the calibre of our local athletes," Mayor Wellington said.

"It is truly inspiring to see the hard work and dedication of Albany’s sports men and women and I look forward to seeing their future achievements."

Craig Wiggins from Albany Cycle Club was presented with the Albany Finance Junior Sportsperson of the Year award for the third year in a row and also took out Wellington & Reeve’s Overall Sportsperson of the Year award for 2016.

Impulse Cycle’s Senior Sportsperson of the Year award was presented to King River Pony Club’s Sonja Johnson for her outstanding efforts in equestrian.

Albany Surf Life Saving Club’s Rob Slattery was presented with the National Lifestyle Village Veteran Sportsperson of the Year award.

Nominations for the Sportsperson of the Year Awards are collated on a monthly basis and reviewed by a judging panel for the selection of the monthly sportsperson winners.

The City of Albany thanks the following sponsors for making the event possible: Wellington and Reeves, Albany Advertiser, GWN7, Regional Express, TripleM, Albany Finance, Impulse Cycles and National Lifestyle Villages.
