Great Southern residents will have plenty of opportunities to experience the fun, practicality and adventure of riding bicycles during Bike Week 2018.

Bike Week runs from Friday, March 16 to Sunday, March 25 with events planned for Albany, Denmark, Mount Barker and South Stirling.

Supported by the Department of Transport, the Albany calendar features inclusive events for children, families, people with disabilities and seniors.

City of Albany TravelSmart Officer Carl Beck said Bike Week is a great opportunity for people to have a go at bike riding for transport, fun or fitness.

“A highlight of our calendar this year is Break the Boundary’s Adaptive Cycling Adventure Camp at Quaranup, as well as an adaptive cycling come and try workshop,” Mr Beck said.

“Break the Boundary offers people with physical disabilities the opportunity to experience the fun of cycling with adaptive equipment including handcycles, recumbent cycles and tandem bikes,” he said.

Other events in Albany include Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre’s Ride & Swim Day, electric bike demonstrations, rides with local cycle clubs and a story ride with Youth Services Librarian Dora Adeline.

Department of Transport’s Executive Director of Integrated Transport Planning Craig Woolridge said it is fantastic to see such a wide variety of events taking place in Albany during Bike Week.

"For more than 30 years, Bike Week has played an integral role in promoting bike riding and we are pleased to see this year’s events taking place right across Albany’s cycle network, parts of which have been co-funded through the Department’s Regional Bicycle Network Grants Program,” Mr Woolridge said.

“This year, we are also proud to have contributed funding to facilitate some of these events which will provide an opportunity for people to dust off their bikes and give riding a go with their families and the community.”

Students and their families will have an opportunity to ride to school on Friday, March 23 for National Ride2School Day and residents are encouraged to cycle to the Sustainable Living Fair & Expo at Albany Town Square on Saturday, March 24.
