Community event to thank firies
18 June 2018
The community will come together in the Town Square this Saturday, June 23, to say thanks to the volunteer firefighters and everyone else who responded to the recent Albany fires.
Council is hosting an event in the Town Square from 3pm to 6pm to show its gratitude for the outstanding efforts of its 16 bush fire brigades, and thank the businesses and individuals who provided invaluable support during the crisis.
There will be entertainment and fun for the whole family, with donation buckets at the event to raise funds for the fire brigades.
Some of the fire trucks that were used to fight the fires will be at the event for the children to see up close, and they will be able to meet some of the volunteer fire fighters.
For gold coin donation, children will be able to jump around on the bouncy castle or have their face painted, Jamie The Clown will bring a bundle of laughs, and the first 500 kids to the event will receive a free bubble wand.
The Albany Shantymen and The Beardless Hipsters will provide live music, there will be a free sausage sizzle and other food and coffee.
Mayor Dennis Wellington said the efforts of our firefighters and support from the community during the bushfires was overwhelming, and Council wanted to show its appreciation.
“The velocity and volume of the fires was unprecedented for Albany, particularly at this time of the year with the weather conditions we experienced, and it was incredible we escaped without tragedy,” he said.
“It was a truly tremendous effort from all our fire brigades and all the firefighters who came to our aid from other regions, and the support the community provided in supporting our firefighters was amazing.
“We want to recognise that and say thank you and urge you all to come down to the Town Square, have a good time, show your appreciation and contribute to the great work our volunteer bush fire brigades do.”
The City will be posting thank you messages to its Facebook page throughout this week to acknowledge the community contributions.
